Founder-led Shopify studio, growing the team carefully. We work with senior contractors across the UK and India and we are open to permanent hires when the right person matches a real client need. Comp bands are published below because hiring with a hidden number wastes everyone's time — if the work and the bracket fit, the conversation is short.

§ 01
Roles open to senior applicants

Three roles open. All senior. Contract or permanent.

ENG-PLUS-2026

Senior Shopify Plus Engineer

5+ years Shopify. Plus migrations, Functions, Checkout Extensibility, custom apps. You can articulate why you made each architecture call on previous Plus builds you have owned end-to-end.

LOCATION Remote-first · UK or India
BAND £75–£95k perm · or day-rate contract
TYPE Contract or permanent
STATUS Scoping — open to senior applicants
WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Magento → Plus or BigCommerce → Plus migration experience
  • Comfort with the GraphQL Admin API, Functions in Rust or JS, and Checkout Extensibility
  • Real opinions on when headless is the right answer (and when it isn't)
  • A take on how to write Liquid that ages well
5-line pitch + CV / GitHub. We reply in 5 working days.

ENG-CRO-2026

Senior CRO Engineer

Half engineer, half analyst. You design tests that reach significance rather than tests that look good in a deck. You can describe your process for avoiding the common CRO failure mode of calling winners on noise.

LOCATION Remote-first · UK or India
BAND £70–£90k perm · or day-rate contract
TYPE Contract or permanent
STATUS Scoping — open to senior applicants
WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • A portfolio of A/B tests with stat-significance methodology described
  • Considered opinions on test prioritisation frameworks (PXL, ICE — and their limits)
  • GA4 and a server-side testing platform (Convert, Optimizely, VWO) at hands-on level
  • You can ship the test yourself — no "I designed it, the dev built it"
5-line pitch + CV / GitHub. We reply in 5 working days.

ENG-LEAD-2026

Lead Architect (Headless / Hydrogen)

You have shipped at least one production Hydrogen build that is still running. You can sit with a client and honestly tell them when headless is the wrong answer for their store.

LOCATION Remote-first · UK or India
BAND £100–£135k perm · or day-rate contract
TYPE Contract or permanent
STATUS Pipeline — open to senior applicants
WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • 8+ years engineering, 3+ on Shopify, 1+ in production Hydrogen
  • Comfort with Remix, edge runtimes (Oxygen / Vercel), CMS-bridge patterns (Sanity, Contentful)
  • A point of view on when MDX content collections beat a CMS, and when they don't
  • Comfortable leading 2–3 engineers async without micromanaging
5-line pitch + CV / GitHub. We reply in 5 working days.

§ 02
What we look for

Six things we screen for.

Specialism over generalism

You don't want to "stay full-stack". Shopify-only is the point — and the engineers who treat Shopify as a destination, not a stepping stone, fit best.

Operator instincts

You think about merchant outcomes before you think about clean code. Engineers with in-house eCommerce ops or merchant-side experience tend to do this naturally.

Direct, written communication

Most of the work happens async via Slack and Loom. You are fluent in writing tight project updates and honest status reports.

Take-the-call attitude

When a client Slack channel needs a response, you respond — no hiding behind the PM. The PM exists to remove blockers, not to be a buffer.

Senior judgement

You should be able to ship code on day one. No learning Shopify on the job — you should be teaching the rest of us things we don't already know.

Long-game decisions

Choices that look good this sprint but bad next year don't get past you. We want code in the studio that ages well over multiple years.

§ 03
What we won't compromise on

Four lines we don't move.

Senior only, no juniors

Every contributor is 5+ years senior, no exceptions. UK and India pools held to the same senior bar.

No bar-lowering to fill slots

Some quarters we add a contributor; some we don't. The senior bar is the studio's most valuable asset and stays where it is.

No design-first hires

We are an engineering specialist. Design happens in partnership with the client or specialist design partners; we do not hire designers in-house.

No agency-operator layer

No producers, no account managers, no strategists. The PM layer stays small — engineering is the product.

§ 04
Hiring process

Six stages. ~3 weeks total.

STAGE 01

Application + 5-line pitch

Send your CV / GitHub / portfolio + 5 lines on the most interesting Shopify problem you have solved. We read everything within 5 working days.

STAGE 02

30-min intro call

Real conversation, not a screening interview. We talk about the work; you talk about you. Both sides decide whether to keep going.

STAGE 03

90-min take-home brief

A specific Shopify task — typically a custom OS 2.0 section + 30 mins of written commentary on your trade-offs. Paid for your time.

STAGE 04

2-hour technical interview

Walk through your take-home with the founder. Discuss two real problems from past engagements. No LeetCode, no whiteboard puzzles.

STAGE 05

Paid trial sprint

A small piece of real client work with full PM and engineering support. You get paid for the work regardless of outcome. Both sides confirm fit at the end.

STAGE 06

Offer + start

Offer within 48 hours of trial completion. Standard 3-month notice respected for permanent roles. Contract roles can start sooner. 30-day onboarding plan in writing on day one.

§ 05
Compensation + benefits

Banded comp. Published openly.

Banded comp

£70–£135k base for permanent roles, banded by level. Day rates published on application for contract roles. Reviewed annually.

Profit-share (when eligible)

Permanent staff share in studio profit on a transparent formula once we cross the relevant thresholds. No performance ranking.

Pension: 8% employer (UK perm)

For UK-based permanent staff: 8% employer contribution on top of the legal minimum. Salary sacrifice available.

Annual leave: 28 days + bank

No "unlimited" theatre. 28 days expected to be taken. Plus UK bank holidays for permanent staff.

Remote-first by design

Engineers work fully remote across the UK and India. No mandatory commute, no mandatory on-site days.

Optional in-person meets

We try to gather the team in person periodically when it makes sense. Travel + accommodation covered for studio-organised meets.

Learning budget

Conferences, courses, books, Shopify certifications — funded at a fair budget per role, used at your discretion.

Hardware on us

A capable laptop and the peripherals you need to do the work. Refreshed on a sensible cycle.

§ 06 / SPECULATIVE

Nothing on the list fits, but you think we should still talk? Send the same five-line pitch. If your specialism matches a real client need, we'll find a slot.

Speculative applications are genuinely welcome. The listed roles are the most active right now — but the studio hires (or contracts) when the right person matches a real client need, not on a fixed cadence.

§ 07
FAQ

Hiring questions.

Do you sponsor visas?

Not currently. UK-based applicants join as direct hires (no visa sponsorship). India-based applicants join under remote contracts. Both pools are vetted to the same senior bar.

Are you remote-only or hybrid?

Remote-first by design. Contributors work across the UK and India. No mandatory commute, no mandatory on-site days. Periodic in-person meets are organised but optional.

Will I get junior engineers to mentor?

Not as a primary part of the role. The studio is senior-only by design. The Lead Architect role includes mentoring senior peers on architecture, but no juniors are hired to be mentored.

Contract or permanent — which is right for me?

Both are open. Contract roles suit experienced freelancers who want flexibility and day-rate billing; permanent roles suit engineers who want to embed long-term with a small studio. Many engagements start as contract and convert to permanent when the work warrants it.

What is the take-home brief like?

90 minutes, paid. A real Shopify task — typically: build a custom OS 2.0 section for related products with metafield filtering, plus 30 minutes of written commentary on your trade-offs. Designed to reflect actual work, not LeetCode-style puzzles.

How does the paid trial sprint work?

You ship a small piece of real client work with full PM and engineering support. You are paid for the work regardless of outcome. At the end, both sides decide whether to convert to a longer engagement. The trial is genuine — either side can step away with no obligation.

Can I see the codebase before joining?

During the trial sprint, yes — full access. Before that, no. We do not share client codebases without an NDA, and internal tooling is not a fair representation pre-offer without proper context.

What if I want to specialise in a specific industry vertical?

Tell us. The studio is reasonably open to vertical specialisation within Shopify — fashion, B2B, beauty, F&B. Engineers who go deep on a vertical tend to end up running those engagements.

Do you offer equity?

Not at present. Profit-share covers the variable upside for permanent staff once eligibility thresholds are met. The studio is a private UK Ltd with no IPO ambition.
