§ 01
Why migrate

Recharge fees scale with success. Native Shopify doesn't.

You're paying Recharge or Bold per subscriber.

Third-party subscription apps charge a percentage of subscription revenue plus per-subscriber fees. At scale, native Shopify Subscriptions removes the entire line item — typically £200–£2,000+/month back in your pocket.

Your subscription UI lives in a clunky third-party portal.

The new extensible Customer Accounts surface plus Customer Account UI Extensions let subscribers manage everything (skip, swap, pause, change frequency, address, payment) inside a branded Shopify experience — no separate portal login.

You sell consumables, supplements, or coffee.

Health & Wellness and Food & Beverage are subscription-native categories. Selling Plans + auto-replenishment + win-back flows is usually 30–40% of revenue at maturity. We build the whole loop, not just the checkout button.

You want build-a-box, prepaid, or gift subscriptions.

These need Cart Transform Functions and bespoke configurator UIs — beyond what off-the-shelf apps deliver. Custom build, owned by you.

Your churn is too high.

Most churn is solvable: better cancellation flows (skip, swap, pause as alternatives), failed-payment dunning, win-back sequences. We instrument the whole funnel during migration so the cohort behaviour is visible — then build the retention surfaces.

§ 06
FAQ

Subscription questions.

Will I lose subscribers when migrating from Recharge to native Shopify? +

No — that is the point of doing it properly. We migrate active subscribers and re-vault payment tokens via Stripe / Shop Pay. There is no re-authorisation email to customers, no break in their billing cadence, and no drop in subscriber count. The 7-day parallel-run period catches any edge cases (paused, declined, gift) before the legacy system is turned off.

How does native Shopify Subscriptions compare cost-wise to Recharge? +

Native Shopify Subscriptions has no per-subscriber or revenue-share fee — you pay only Shopify's standard transaction fees. Recharge typically charges 1% + $0.10 per subscription transaction (or higher on lower tiers). At £100k/month subscription revenue, that's ~£12k/year in fees that disappear. Migration usually pays for itself inside 6–12 months.

Do I need Shopify Plus for native Subscriptions? +

No. Native Shopify Subscriptions are available on all plans, including Basic, Shopify, and Advanced. Some advanced features (multi-currency subscriptions for Markets, B2B per-customer plans) need Plus, but the core selling-plan capability is universal.

Can subscribers manage their subscriptions inside their account? +

Yes — that is built on Shopify's extensible Customer Accounts plus Customer Account UI Extensions. Skip, swap product, change frequency, change address, change payment, pause, cancel — all inside the branded Shopify customer account. No separate Recharge / Bold portal login.

Do you build build-a-box and prepaid subscriptions? +

Yes — that is the Build-a-Box / Custom tier. Build-a-box uses the Cart Transform Function to merge selected products into a single subscription line item with a fixed bundle price. Prepaid subscriptions use Selling Plan groups configured for advance billing. Both ship with the configurator UI on PDP and management surfaces in the customer account.

How do you handle failed payments and dunning? +

Shopify's native Subscriptions APIs trigger payment retries automatically (configurable schedule). We layer Klaviyo dunning flows on top — soft notice on first failure, harder warning on second, win-back-with-incentive on third — with the subscription paused rather than cancelled by default so the customer can reactivate without re-creating the plan.

Can I run subscriptions and one-time purchases on the same product? +

Yes. Selling Plans attach to products / variants and the PDP shows a "Subscribe & save 10%" option alongside the one-time price. Many brands also offer a free first delivery on subscription as a CRO lever — easy to A/B once the infrastructure is in.

What about subscription analytics — MRR, churn, LTV? +

Native Shopify reporting covers the basics. We typically install a subscription-analytics dashboard (either via the Shopify analytics suite, or a thin custom app reading Subscription Contracts via GraphQL Admin) to surface MRR, gross + net churn, cohort retention, AOV by plan, and skip-vs-cancel ratios. Included in every tier.

How long does a Recharge → native Shopify migration take? +

Typically 5–7 weeks for a £9,999 migration with up to ~50k active subscribers. Larger subscriber bases (100k+) extend to 8–10 weeks. The bottleneck is usually payment-token re-vaulting cadence (Stripe rate limits) rather than build time.
